How Valorant ranked works

In Valorant you move up by earning Rank Rating (RR). From Iron to Ascendant a rank takes 100 RR, five placement matches set your start, and Immortal and Radiant use regional RR thresholds instead. This guide follows Riot's support pages, read on 23 October 2026. Riot changes the rules between seasons, so check its pages for the current numbers.

Key facts

  • Iron through Ascendant: you go up a rank each time you reach 100 RR.
  • After placement you start with 50 RR in your rank. After a promotion you start the next rank with at least 10 RR.
  • Five placement matches at the start of a season and mid-season. Later Acts need one if you already placed.
  • Immortal 2, Immortal 3 and Radiant use RR thresholds that differ by region. Radiant also needs a top-500 place in the region.

Ranks

The ladder runs Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Ascendant, Immortal and Radiant. Iron through Ascendant have three sub-ranks each (1, 2, 3), and Immortal has three too.

RR from Iron to Ascendant

You earn RR for wins and lose it for defeats, and you go up a rank each time you reach 100 RR. After a promotion you start the next rank with a minimum of 10 RR as a buffer, so the leftover count can differ a little from a straight line.

To be demoted you must reach 0 RR and then lose again. Riot says the lowest you can start in the next rank down after a demotion is 70 RR.

Placement matches

Every player plays five placement matches at the start of a season and of the mid-season. In later Acts a player who already placed plays one match to update the rank. After placement you start with 50 RR in the rank Riot gives you.

Why RR gains differ

Riot says RR changes mostly with the result of the match, then, from Iron to Ascendant, with the round difference and your own performance. It also compares your hidden rating with your rank: when the rating is higher, wins give more RR and losses cost less.

Immortal and Radiant

Immortal 1 starts at 10 RR. Immortal 2, Immortal 3 and Radiant need RR thresholds that differ for each region, and Radiant also needs a place among the top 500 players of the region. In Immortal you drop a sub-rank when you fall below the regional threshold, and from Immortal 1 you drop when you reach 0 RR and lose again. Riot lists the thresholds per region on its support page and can change them, so look them up there.

To keep a place on the leaderboard Riot says to play at least one competitive match every 7 days.

Questions people ask

One hundred from Iron through Ascendant. Immortal and Radiant use regional thresholds.

Five at the start of a season and of the mid-season, and one in later Acts for a player who already placed.

Riot compares your hidden rating with your rank. If your rating is higher than your rank, wins give more RR and losses cost less.

That depends on your win rate and your RR per win and loss. The free Valorant RR calculator turns those numbers into an estimate, up to Immortal.
